Global Health | Breast Cancer

Like many women across Africa, Yvonne’s breast cancer was diagnosed at a later stage, when it can be more difficult to treat. Advances in early detection, diagnosis and treatment mean that more women are surviving breast cancer today. But that progress has not reached everyone equally. Recent WHO estimates show that five-year breast cancer survival rates are nearly 90% in some regions, compared with just 39% in Sub-Saharan Africa. Since 2022, Rwanda has worked with Pfizer’s Accord for a Healthier World to expand access to medicines and strengthen the systems that help patients like Yvonne get the care they need. Her story underscores why closing gaps in breast cancer care requires both improving access to earlier diagnosis, and ensuring quality treatment is available when women need it most.
